With Liberty and Justice for New Hampshire and Iowa

So what, that in 1952, New Hampshire wrote into state law that they must always go first in the primary? Alsaska and Hawaii were not even part of the Union in 1952! What's the big deal if Iowa elects to use antiquated systems such as cuacuses and straw polls to choose their delegates? Who cares? We should!

Our nation's "democratic process" is far from democratic. It is common knowledge that  the delegate who wins the NH primary and IA caucus, will enjoy a sure path to the presidency.

Why these two states? New Hampshire's and Iowa's demographics are in no way representative of our nation. Neither state can lay claim to a large urban area. Furthermore, neither state can boast a racially, ethnically, or culturally diverse population. It is of no coincidence that  racially/ethnically/culturally diverse groups, from large urban areas, are more likely to vote Democratic.

I urge you to read the article in The Boston Globe by Charles Euchner, October 14, 2007. Euchner proposes that we "Look to the NBA Draft to Fix the Primary Mess."  Not a bad idea!

It may be too late to take action for the 2008 election. Nevertheless, we are obligated to take a stand to ensure that this "mess" becomes a part of history and make good on our pledge, "with liberty and justice for all".
